Oxymoron was born Samuel Montes in Inglewood CA to a New York-Rican mother and a Mexican Father. Being raised, with his little sister, Priscilla, in a spanish Pentecostal Christian church, still didn't prepare him for some of the uncertainties he experienced as a youth. His parents divorced at at age 13 which was a heavy burden on everyone involved. Although his mother bound them together with a strong faith in God, Sammy began to develop depression, fits of anger and suicidal ideations. His growing obsessions with dying brought his mother close to admitting him to a mental institution a number of times. Times was tough and Samuel needed an outlet.
A friend was responsible to introducing Samuel to Hiphop, through a cassette of Ice Cube's "Death Certificate, and as a loner throughout his highschool years, he would find solace in two of his favorite pass times: reading dictionaries & listening to rap! When Walkman's were modern tech, his was blasting Hiphop legends like the Fugees, Tupac & a Tribe Called Quest into his ears. Hiphop created in Samuel an affinity for word play, writing poems & short stories, that even grabbed the attention of his teachers whom helped him hone his skill.
At age 18 Samuel wrote what he considers his 1st rap about the clouds of depression that had tormented his life. Soon after, in an effort to encourage peace into his life, his mother passed him a Christ-centered cassette of Cross Movements 'Heavens Mentality' and at once he made the connection that God lives in Hiphop and was intrigued by the unique sound profiles of underground faith-based Hiphop. This would lead him to investigate more of what was being called the 'Gospel Rap' scene as he searched for the most passionate and skillful of Gods MC's. Early on he came across Dirt's late 90's release 'Plague' and this album, along with others (the Cross Movement, Tunnel Rats, DeepSpace 5, Mars Ill, ect) would begin to serve as inspiration as he began to embark on his own Mic Career.
2001, in Sam's personal life, after half-heartedly attending church on and off & experiencing failed relationships, a wearied Sam responded to an alter call and accepted Jesus the Messiah as Lord of his life. Soon after a new zeal provoked him to begin emceeing with a new Gospel-based directive & his friend-given nickname Bufa in crews like 'Land of weirdos' (with his sister) & 'the Soapbox Poetz'.
Sammy comes to Shadow of the Locust as 'the Oxymoron' which represents how the perfect Holy Spirit of God could dwell in the wretched imperfection of human beings through faith in the finished work of Christ’s death and resurrection, to combine two contradictory terms together to create a perfect figure of speech. His rap cadence is immediately fresh as it contradicts itself in between a melodic drag and speeds up with almost too many syllables per bar! Fully capable of creatively expanding on what you expect in a verse, the Oxymoron brings a welcomed balance to the the rougher monotoned of the Locust Crew with meticulous rhythmic patterns that often come off as vicious on the mic.
Look to the Sky Heed the Warning..... the Oxymoron has joined with the Locust to threaten the world's thought system with audio, gospel, hypnotic raps!
